The Starting Line: How Much Air In My Rear Tire?

The optimal air pressure for your rear tire depends on various factors, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. It varies based on the type of tire, whether it's a slick or a DOT street tire, the type of bike, the length of the bike, the weight of the bike, track conditions, weather, and even the rider's size. It's recommended to experiment with different tire pressures during practice runs to find the pressure that works best for your specific setup on a given day.

For a street tire, the suggested range is between 15 to 30 lbs, depending on track conditions. On a bar bike, some riders aim to stay close to 10 lbs for optimal traction and tire wear. Racers using slicks may find that different combinations work best, with some running as low as 5 lbs, but it's essential to avoid going too low as it can result in less contact surface and reduced grip.

Ultimately, the best approach is to test and play with tire pressures during practice sessions to determine what works for your bike and setup. Additionally, factors such as shock settings and the age of the tire also play a role in finding the optimal tire pressure. It's recommended to adjust the pressure based on your goals, whether you're aiming for maximum speed or consistent bracket racing, and to prioritize safety while experimenting with different pressures.
