Questions and Answers:
I'm not able to program the ASM. - The ASM will only allow programming changes with the activation signal is off (yellow wire). If you are not using a toggle switch on this yellow wire (recommended), then you'll need to remove this wire from it's 12v source so you can program the unit.
The RPM reading on my tachometer does not match the RPM reading on the ASM. - The "Pulse" setting needs to be adjusted. There are 4 settings for the tach "pulse". Try each one until the RPM on the ASM display matches your tachometer.
My Auto Shift is not working. - First, make sure the unit works properly when shifting with the push button. This will ensure you have everything wired properly. Next, make sure you have enabled the Auto Shift function. Now start the vehicle and look at the ASM display. Engine RPM's should match the readings on your tachometer. If they do not, enter into the menu of the ASM and adjust the "pulse setting" until the display reads the same as your tachometer. Once this has been verified, set the shift RPM to a low RPM (must be above 3500 RPM) and go for a test ride to make sure the unit auto shifts. Once this is verified, change the RPM settings to a higher RPM, but lower than your normal shift RPM. Since many factory tachometers are not accurate at high RPM, we want to make sure you are not hitting a rev limiter before your set RPM. If the unit still does not want to shift after changing RPM, inspect your tach wire connection. If this signal is not clean, it can become inaccurate especially under load and high RPM. Old, dirty spark plugs can also cause misfires and inaccurate RPM readings. This is further multiplied by turbo or nitrous applications where air/fuel ratios are richer and harder for the ignition system to light. If you are getting erratic shifting, check spark plugs and white wire connection/routing.
I have a Kawasaki ZX-14R. The auto shift was working great, then it started to miss some shifts. Is there a better tach signal connection than a coil signal wire? The coil signal connection on the ZX-14R is the best place to get a tach signal. Usually on this model, most mis-shifts occur from 2-3 when the bike us under full hard load. An increase in kill time of 15ms can help. You can also lower the shift RPM by 2-300 RPM to help trigger the shift a little sooner.
I recently had a RSR Air Shift Module (ASM) installed on my gen 2 Hayabusa. It’s short shifting 1-2 & 2-3, approximately 1200rpm short. I tried raising the shift point and it did the same thing. Any suggestions how to fix this? - Short shifting (shifting early) can be caused by a tire spin or clutch slip. Adjusting tire pressure and suspension to the current track conditions should solve this. It can also occur during a misfire. When a misfire occurs the ASM can see this voltage spike as a multi-spark event and activate a shift. A quick solution is to change the spark plugs, inspect the coils and wiring. If this issue still persists, relocating the white tach signal wire to a dedicated tach output at the ECU should help.
My bike sometimes wants to double shift when in auto-shift mode. How can I eliminate this? - This is usually the result of not enough kill time, reduced traction and/or clutch slip. Ensure you have maximum traction by adjusting tire pressure, suspension and having a well prepped racing surface. Check any inline air filters for debris or loss of air flow/pressure to the solenoid or ram. An increase in kill time may be required to adapt to the current weather conditions. Putting the ASM into manual shift mode can determine if the issue is with the auto-shift RPM reading or with the kill settings in the controller. If the unit shifts perfectly with the push button, then the RPM reading is to blame.
I have a GS1000 with a DRL400 on it and I am putting one of your air shift modules on it I need to know what to do with the white / green/ orange/and pink wires. - The Red wire from the DRL400 to the ignition coils will be cut. The side going to the DRL will connect to the ASM Orange wire. The side going to the coils will connect to the Pink wire. The White wire on the ASM will be connected to only 1 of the coil negative signal wires (Blue OR White) The Green wire on the ASM will be connected to your shift button. When pressed, the ASM will activate a shift.
